Ryan Holmes, HootSuite CEO

Ryan Holmes is the CEO of HootSuite. Thought leader, dog lover and serial entrepreneur, he has redefined the face of social media – bringing Twitter, Facebook and other social networks out of the dorm room and into the boardroom.

Holmes has grown HootSuite from a lean startup to a global leader in social media with over 5 million users, including 79 of the Fortune 100 companies. A college drop-out, he started a paintball company and pizza restaurant before founding Invoke Media, the company that developed HootSuite in 2009.

Today, Holmes is an authority on the social business revolution, quoted in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal and called upon to speak at TEDx and SXSW Interactive Conferences. An angel investor and advisor, he mentors startups in Canada and around the world. Through HootSuite University, Holmes partners with major universities to deliver social media coursework to the next generation of business leaders.

History

Ryan grew up in Vernon, British Columbia, with no electricity, yet managed to be a technologist from a young age. Starting into entrepreneurship early at only 6, Ryan was busy salvaging lumber and nails at $0.01 per nail; at age 12 he was washing local stores’ windows for spare cash; at 16 he started his own paintball field; and by 23 he owned his own pizza restaurant. All of these experiences taught him about running his own business and marketing it to those who mattered; the pillars of entrepreneurship. This experience, combined with a long-standing passion for computers and the internet scene, prompted Ryan to found Invoke Media, a company specializing in the construction of websites and the business that ultimately lead to HootSuite’s creation in late 2008.

Invoke had created software for businesses to run contests online. Companies utilizing the software began asking for social media support backing their contests. It was in providing this support that Invoke saw a need for a management tool that would help clients avoid having to continuously log in and out of various social media accounts and prevent team members from stepping on each other’s toes.

In September, 2008 the HootSuite concept was drawn out and the product launched later that fall. What started off as a three-man project within Invoke quickly turned into something bigger. Everyone involved realised the potential and popularity of this new tool and within only a year (October 2009), HootSuite was incorporated and separated from Invoke.

By November of 2010, 1 million people across the globe were using Hootsuite and the company’s growth has quickened ever since. Today, the company has well over 5 million users spanning 6 continents, taking advantage of the features of Free, Pro and Enterprise accounts, as well as an App Directory with close to 50 other distinct apps.
